Artificial ingredients have been removed from classic McDonald’s burgers
McDonald’s burgers have just gotten more “real”. The fast food giant has already used fresh beef for its quarter-pound burgers, and it has gone even further by removing artificial preservatives, flavors and colors from two-thirds of its menu. The changes affect all seven classic McDonald’s burgers: Burger, McDouble, Big Mac, Single and Double Cheeseburgers, and Single and Double Quarter Pounders with Cheese.
As CNN reports, calcium propionate (a preservative often used in bread) has been removed from hamburger buns and sorbic acid (another preservative) has been removed from American cheese used by McDonald’s. The Big Mac Special Sauce has also been revamped, and ingredients like potassium sorbate, sodium benzoate and calcium disodium EDTA have been removed “without sacrificing that characteristic taste,” McDonald’s said in a statement. As for the beef, it has always been “100% pure” meaning it contains no additives, preservatives or fillers, and has been seasoned with just a pinch of salt and pepper. .
A notable exception to the new rule are pickles, which still contain an artificial preservative. The McDonald’s move recognizes “that now more than ever, people care about their food – where it comes from, what’s in it and how it’s prepared,” the company said. A spokesperson for McDonald’s said Forbes that individual franchises set their own prices, but the company does not anticipate significant price increases due to menu changes.
Previously, McDonald’s was removing artificial preservatives from its Chicken McNuggets, announcing plans to use only sustainably sourced coffee by 2020, and use only cage-free eggs in the US and Canada by 2025 As CNN notes, this is part of a general industry trend that has seen fast food chains like Taco Bell, Subway, and Panera remove artificial ingredients from their food offerings.
