7 of Acadiana’s juiciest classic burgers

I’m on the hunt for the best all-American burgers in Acadiana.

You know the genre.

A juicy, seared burger with a few fresh toppings and a slice of American cheese to seal it all in. A classic burger without all the bells and whistles that have become so trendy on the burger scene. A burger that is wrapped in foil or is served on a paper plate.

No Kobe beef. No Manchego cheese. No truffle oils, fruit preserves or guacamole.

Sometimes I wonder if all these extras hide a mediocre pancake.

Thanks to recommendations and my own exploration, I narrowed it down to just seven. Here are the results of my big burger quest, in no particular order:

1. Acadian mini-market

The Acadian Superette is the perfect representation of Freetown and all it has to offer. Unassuming and unassuming, this neighborhood grocery store serves some of the best food and burgers in town.

The Acadian Superette’s cheeseburger is everything a classic burger should be – almost 1/2 pound charred but not dry, seasoned but not overwhelming ground chuck that’s dressed the way you like it.

“I just fried it in a black iron pan in the gravy of the meat,” says Lynn Derenthal, owner of Acadian Superette. “What else can I say besides they are delicious?” “

Derenthal has owned the grocery store and restaurant for 24 years. She rented the business for two years, but returned in October and started making her burgers again.

Burgers are served all day – who says you can’t have a village for breakfast? – from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday to Friday and from 7 a.m. to noon on Saturday.

You can even buy a burger for just $ 3 every weekend.

2. Gary’s IG Grocery and Market

Another Freetown staple, this independent grocery store has become more known for its hot food than its groceries.

The delicious breakfast sandwiches and lunch plates sometimes eclipse the burger here.

But the burger deserves to be recognized.

Thick and charred, this 1/2 pound burger begins with chopped chuck that has been massaged with seasonings, breadcrumbs and eggs before being cooked on a 15 year old grill.

Gary's IG Grocery and Market

The American is the only cheese option you’ll find for this classic burger.

“We believe in keeping it simple,” says Troy Kling, owner and operator of Gary’s. “That’s Gary’s strategy. We’re focusing on a few things that are really, very good.”

And like Acadian Superette, you can order a burger for lunch. The breakfast burger comes with a fried egg and bacon.

Gary’s serves burgers for breakfast and lunch on weekdays only, 6:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday.

3. Ten “almost famous”Daiquiri

This fun bar on Kaliste Saloom boasts of “almost famous” daiquiris.

And while Dix’s premium liquor daiquiris are common knowledge, the “almost famous” burgers and platters aren’t as well known to those who don’t frequent the bar regularly.

The 1/2 pound or 1/4 pound burger patties (your choice) are moderately spiced with a homemade seasoning before they are cooked on a flat grill.

The burgers are served on a kaiser or jalapeño cheese bun with traditional burger toppings and a choice of cheese (go classic with the American).

“Every burger is just cooked with love,” says bar general manager Brandon Jerrell. “Having guys there who love to cook makes a huge difference. I’ll be walking back there, and they always give me a taste of something new.”

The burgers are served with homemade chips.

Get your burger fix at Dix any day of the week, 11am to 2am Monday through Saturday or 11am to midnight Sunday.

4. Broaddus Burgers

Located in a former Sonic Drive-In on Moss Street, Broaddus Burgers has a classic American vibe. You even raise a flag to let a server know you’re ready to order.

This place doesn’t just serve classic burgers. Gourmet toppings, buns, and patties are part of the mix here, but the classic burger is too good to ignore.

This 1/3-pound flame-grilled ground beef patty starts with a damp seasoning mix to keep the finished product juicy.

“The secret is in the seasoning and how you cook it,” says Shawn Broaddus, the restaurant owner. “I am definitely saying to use a charcoal grill because any burger touched by a flame will be much better.”

Broaddus’ burgers start out simple and are fully customizable with toppings. Keep it classic with a white bun, American cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, onions and your favorite condiments.

A staple of the drive-through menu, burgers are available from opening at 11 a.m. until closing at 9 p.m. daily.

5. Hostel of Justice

Judice Inn is Lafayette’s most famous spot for the perfect classic burger.

This Johnston Street institution has hardly changed in its 68 years of existence, which could be the biggest part of the restaurant outside of the burgers.

Judice Inn has the allure of an old-fashioned burger with a style of seasoning and a secret sauce that is perfectly spicy for anyone used to tasty Acadian cuisine.

The 1/4 pound patties are made with chopped Took’s Fine Meats chuck and a homemade seasoning blend. The patties are then cooked on a gas grill.

Cheeseburgers always include American cheese, and burgers come with a spicy tomato-based sauce, a mix of lettuce, mustard, and mayonnaise, and an onion slice on the side.

“Our menu is about as simple and basic as it gets,” says Gerald Judice, the general manager. “We only have a few options and a few ingredients. We don’t sell much other than burgers and cheeseburgers, beers and cokes.”

Sometimes all you are looking for is simple.

That is, if you don’t mind forgoing the fries with your burger. After more than 60 years in the same building, the folks at Judice Inn still proudly serve fries over fries.

The burgers are served all day, every day, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., Monday to Thursday, and from 10 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

6. Max’s billiard room

This dimly lit spot on the corner of Kaliste Saloom and Pinhook roads won’t win any awards for its decor, but if you’re looking for a good burger, it won’t disappoint.

This burger starts with 1/3 pound of Heleaux ground beef and ends with an Evangeline Maid bun.

American cheese, shredded lettuce, chopped onions, tomatoes, pickles, mayonnaise, and mustard are standard toppings, but you can make the burger any way you like.

The folks at Max’s Pool Hall have been making classic burgers since the bar opened in 1983. The grill is as old as the pool hall, which is half the charm.

“I’m sure it has something to do with our burgers being so good,” says Patrick Loughlin, general manager of the pool hall. “If you took our burgers and cooked them somewhere else, they probably wouldn’t taste so good.”

Like Judice Inn, you’ll get fries instead of fries with your burger. And Max’s doesn’t even offer bacon as a supplement. The menu is small but adequate.

Served from 11 a.m. to 1:30 a.m. Monday to Saturday, this burger is perfect any time of the day.

7. Green Oaks Lounge

This dive bar on Guilbeau Road is a place you know because you’re a regular or because you’ve heard of burgers from Charley G’s executive chef, Holly Goetting.

I am a member of the second group.

Green Oaks has been around for a few decades, but burgers have only been in the mix for about 14 years under current owner Susan Pool.

The patties weigh just under half a pound and are cooked on a traditional flat grill.

“These are homemade patties that are good and spicy,” Pool says. “What makes them special?” It’s not just the spice. It’s not just the meat. Let’s put it that way. “

You won’t find gourmet toppings here. American is the only cheese option, and the toppings don’t go beyond standard lettuce, tomatoes, onions, pickles, mayonnaise, and mustard.

Burgers are served from 11 a.m. to 12:40 a.m. on weekdays, from noon to 12:40 a.m. on Saturday and from noon to 11 p.m. on Sunday.
